Frequently Asked Questions
Is coaching the same as therapy?
No, coaching and therapy are very distinct from one another.

Coaching focuses on growth, goals, and forward movement. A coach helps clients build resilience, develop skills, and create strategies to meet clients' goals. Coaches do not diagnose or clinically treat mental illness. Coaching is future-oriented and designed to support motivation, clarity, and accountability.
Therapy is a clinical service provided by a licensed professional. Therapists diagnose and treat mental health conditions (such as major depression, eating disorder and PTSD) and work with clients to process trauma, heal past wounds, and manage symptoms.
Are your coaches trained mental health professionals?
Yes. Our coaches have credentialed training that includes degrees from reputable universities including Liberty University and board certifications through the International Board of Christian Care (IBCC). Each coach has completed 100+ hours of specialized training in the mental health field, equipping them to provide knowledgeable and compassionate support.
How many sessions should I expect for 1:1 coaching?
While every client's needs vary, Safe Steps Consulting coaching aims to explore six areas of growth for overall mental well-being. These areas are typically discussed over 4 to 6 sessions. Based on a client's needs, further sessions may be recommended. A client may wish to develop new goals that continue the coaching process.
How do you help with trauma in coaching?
Seeking mental health coaching in the early onset of a traumatic event can decrease the likelihood of developing further dysfunction, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Our Crisis Consultations are specially geared towards helping a person stabilize through securing a support system, connecting with practical resources, addressing limiting beliefs, and developing healthy coping strategies for newfound growth.
How do you incorporate biblical principles in your coaching practice?
Safe Steps Consulting welcomes individuals from all backgrounds. Our coaching practice is foundationally shaped by biblical principles, which guide our compassion, respect, and commitment to each client’s growth. If a client chooses, we may include prayer, Biblical scriptures, and faith-based exercises in our sessions. While Scripture anchors our perspective and hope, we also draw from evidence-based practices and research to address complex challenges and approach each person with nuanced care.
Can I still receive coaching while I'm seeing a therapist?
Yes, coaching can focus on present goals, while therapy may focus on treating mental illness symptoms or diving deeper into the past. The healing process typically warrants a team of helpers to support those experiencing crisis. We encourage our clients to remain transparent with their network of service providers as to not interfere with any one process.
What online platforms do you conduct sessions on?
Online coaching sessions can be done over Google Meet, Zoom, or FaceTime.
Do you accept insurance?
No. Coaching services are not generally covered by insurance providers.
Do you offer a sliding scale?
Yes. We reserve limited slots to ensure the sustainability of our practice. Clients must meet certain criteria. Eligibility is not guaranteed. Please inquire during your free 15-minute Discovery Call.
Do you refer clients out to other providers?
Yes. Our coaches are committed to serving clients with excellence and maintain to honor their scope of practice. If a client’s needs extend beyond what coaching can provide, we may recommend a referral to a trusted mental health professional including licensed therapists. Out of care for each client, we also invite follow-up to ensure they were able to connect with the right provider.
